Melbourne, Australia (AHN) – Defending Australian Open champion Rafael Nadal quit Tuesday’s quarterfinal match vs. Andy Murray due to a knee injury.
Murray had been leading Nadal 6-3, 7-6 (7-2), 3-0 at the time the latter retired, so there was little chance Rafa was going to add to his total of six Grand Slams.
Murray is the first British man in 25 years to advance to the Australian semis, and said he deserved to be there despite Nadal’s ailments.
Andy Roddick complained of a sore shoulder, meanwhile, in his 7-6 (7-4), 6-3, 3-6, 2-6, 6-3 loss to No. 14 seed Marin Cilic.
Roddick has not fought off a two-set deficit to win in a major in seven years.
Cilic and Murray will face off next in the semis.
In women’s play, meanwhile, Jie Zheng toppled Maria Kirilenko 6-1, 6-3.
